DownloadNot long ago, I was in a discussion in which some of the participants spoke of theology in a universal sense without qualifications. The conversation struck me because of the conspicuous absence of any sense of diversity in theological thought. By absence of diversity, here I mean the lack of racialized scholars and scholars from the Global South. Although none of those participating stated it explicitly, it was obvious to me that they were talking about Western European and Anglo North Atlantic expressions of theology. The participants seemed oblivious of the fact that since the 1960s there has been a rich proliferation of theological strands that ought to make it very difficult for anyone to speak about theology without acknowledging this wide array of theological expressions. After the conversation, I started thinking about the conditions within academic scholarship that prevent scholars from coming into contact with and learning from this marvelous theological gamut. In some circles, I have noticed, this great motley is often reduced to the handle of “contextual theologies.” In other contexts, people group these diverse strands of theology under the language of liberation theologies.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssueThe realities that these theological schools represent spill out far beyond the specific nomenclature that the labels contextual and liberation seem to suggest. Their concerns, the challenges they confront, the social reality to which they are speaking, the actors involved, the communities from which they speak, and the theological insights they offer are irreducible to a single definition or category. To complicate matters more, each of these theological strands are internally diverse and correspond with multiple points of concern and perspectives. That is certainly true for Latina/o/x theological strands. The range of issues and concerns confronted by Latina/o/x scholars and the themes they have engaged over the years have multiplied exponentially. For some time now—as Fernando Segovia would say—we have ceased to think of ourselves as second-class theologians and scholars. At the same time, it is worth recognizing that—in the words of Ada María Isasi-Díaz—la lucha continúa/the struggle continues!
Notwithstanding our struggles, we have a voluminous legacy of great contributions, theological insights, and methodological approaches that now can be found across the academic theological spectrum. Our works and writings are now the subject of dissertations by a new generation of theological students from dominant cultural groups as well as those from racialized and minoritized groups, including our own Latinas/os/xs students. So, we find ourselves at a unique crossroads in which a new generation of Latina/o/x scholars are raising critical questions about previous theological contributions, and in the process are expanding our own contributions to the critical study of theology.
Three of the articles in this issue of Perspectivas put on display the back-and-forth dance between critically appreciating the theological legacy from previous generations on one hand and imagining ways forward that respond to our current reality on the other. Considering the recent discussions on synodality by Pope Francis, Amirah Orozco engages in a process of reclamation of the Encuentros for Hispanic Ministry as contextual expressions of synodality since the 1970s. Meanwhile, Neal Spadafora engages in a critical re-reading of Enrique Dussel’s treatment of Marx to highlight important resonances between Marxism and Latina/o/x theological thought. Lastly, Isabela Leonor Rosales invites us to creatively rethink how we engage indigenous communities as we move towards the creation of a decolonial theoretical framework. Rosales challenges us to go beyond the romanticization of indigenous identities and instead move towards “authentic solidarity” with these communities.
Our fourth and final article takes on Catholic moral teaching with regards to questions of sexual identity and its implications for members of the LGBTQIA+ communities. Taking the tragic attack at the Pulse Nightclub in Florida in June 2016 and other ethnographic studies as point of departure, Leonardo Mendoza proposes other avenues for rethinking Catholic moral teaching by engaging the works of Shawn Copeland and Ada María Isasi-Díaz. We are also pleased to include five book reviews (two of which have been translated also into Spanish) showcasing the continuing theological production by Latina/o/x scholars. The editorial team is delighted to offer to our readers this 2023 issue of Perspectivas.

Resumen:Hace no mucho tiempo, yo estaba en una discusión en la que los que participaban hablaban de teología en un sentido universal y sin matizar sus afirmaciones. Tomé nota de la conversación por la obvia ausencia de cualquier sentido de diversidad teológica. Por ausencia de diversidad quiero dar a entender aquí a la falta de estudiosos y teólogos racializados y del sur global. Aunque ninguno de los participantes lo dijeron explícitamente, me era evidente que los participantes de tal discusión se referían a las expresiones de teología europeas occidentales y anglo noratlánticas. Parecía que los participantes ignoraban el hecho que a partir de los 1960s ha habido una rica proliferación de corrientes teológicas que deberían hacer difícil que cualquier persona hable de la teología sin reconocer esta amplia diversidad de expresiones teológicas. DownloadFor some time now, I have heard people talk about returning to “normalcy”, to the times before the Coronavirus. Indeed, among some Latina/os/xs and other ethnoracial and cultural communities, COVID changed some of the most basic aspects of human interactions like a handshake, greeting someone with a hug or a kiss, or how physical space is occupied by people. But that is changing as people gain new confidence and get back to some modicum of human interaction.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssueHowever, the aspirational return to the times before COVID as if those times were better than now is a matter of perspective. In the words of Ada María Isasi-Díaz, La lucha continua. Racialized social and cultural discrimination continue; racialized people continue to be criminalized and deemed foreigners; thousands of seasonal farm workers keep crossing borders to give themselves and their families a fighting chance; and countless migrants continue to make the dangerous journey across political borders. These concerns impact many people from many countries and ethnoracial backgrounds. From a Latina/o/x perspective, these realities were in place since before the pandemic and will continue well beyond the pandemic is under control. Latinas/os/xs continue to work hard at overcoming the social factors and structures that prevent them from contributing to society more fully.
In different ways, the three articles in this issue of Perspectivas illustrate how social struggles are part of the reality of Latinas/os/xs at the grassroots. They also show how questions of social justice remain part of the scholarly and theological production of Latinas/os/xs. In the first article, Breno Martins Campos and Fernando Nacimiento critically engage the work of Rubem Alves. They retrace some of the key original insights that made Alves a theologian of hope and liberation. Focusing specifically on the children’s book The Girl and the Enchanted Bird, Campos and Nacimiento retrace the development of Alves liberation theology and uncover other strands and thinkers that influenced his thought, including Paul Ricoeur.
In the second article, Antonio Frietze exposes some of the dangers of the rhetoric of pluralism for racialized and minoritized communities. He highlights the experiences of the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan and their struggle for recognition of their burial grounds at The Alamo in San Antonio. Frietze exposes how the logic of pluralism flattens distinct sociopolitical identity claims thus not granting any especial recognition to any group even while deploying the rhetoric of inclusion. He proposes the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan might consider adopting the label “Latinx Indigenous” communities as a common bridge identity which can bring mutual benefits to both the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan and Latina/o/x communities.
Finally, Theresa Yugar’s third article recounts a wide range of environmental resistance groups both in the USA and in Latin America. Taking the Quechua-Aymara notion of buen vivir or sumak kawsay as inspiration metaphor and framework for environmental struggles, she documents a wide variety of environmental activist groups. She shows how some of these groups have long-standing histories. She also shows that there are newly emerging advocacy groups involved in social justice struggles in a wide range of social concerns.
Whether before, during or after COVID, for Latinas/os/xs struggle does not seem to change much. In other words, struggle is our normal. The editorial team of Perspectivas is pleased to offer these articles as tokens of the diversity of authors involved in the struggle through their writings.

En el segundo artículo, Antonio Frietze desenmascara algunos de los peligros de la retórica del pluralismo para comunidades racializadas y minorizadas. Twenty-one years ago, I walked through the doors of the offices of HTI as an aspiring Ph.D. student and potential awardee of what was then the doctoral fellowship. I did not know then that barely four years before HTI had begun its ambitious plans to chart new paths and create new opportunities for Latinas/os/xs aspiring for further education in religion and theology. Among its objectives was to increase the number of Latinas/os/xs in higher religious and theological education. Since then, HTI has witnessed enormous growth amidst rapidly changing social, cultural, political, and academic landscapes. A long list of Latinas/os/xs would be awardees from different fields of study and disciplines, and today “give back” to the community as scholars, mentors, and resources. This first generation of scholars has become a veritable cloud of witness rallying for the future cohorts of scholars, pastors, and community leaders in multiple contexts prepared with critical skills to navigate the hostile social contexts they confront. From any perspective, the story of HTI is a story of monumental achievements.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssueWe are cautiously optimistic because many of the concerns and challenges faced by Latina/o/x communities that motivated early pioneers to organize and give birth to organizations such as the Association for Hispanic Theological Education/Associación para la Educación Teológica Hispana (AETH), The Hispanic Summer Program/Programa Hispano de Verano (HSP) and the Hispanic Theological Initiave/Iniciative Teológica Hispana (HTI) have not yet been overcome. The reality of COVID-19 and its disastrous effects on our communities have made us even more aware of the obstacles we face. The acute awareness of our precarious social spaces helps us appreciate even more the work of organizations like the aforementioned, especially HTI, constantly bringing to bear the stories, theological insights, publications, and commitments of those men and women who pioneered this work.
The editorial team of Perspectivas is honored to present this 25th-anniversary issue as yet another installment in the growing record of Latina/o/x concerted work and HTI’s living legacy. The articles in this volume contain what can only be called a partial story. Indeed, through Justo González’s article, we learn of the early beginnings, key actors, and high-level negotiations that the first generation of Latinas/os/xs had to engage to give rise to HTI. Daisy Machado’s piece provides another layer of this story by bearing the intimate relationship between HTI and HSP.
The articles illustrate insights into many of the aspects that make HTI particularly successful: from highlighting the unique en/de conjunto method which distinguishes the activities of HTI (João Chaves and Ted Smith), to incorporating the voices of the people on the ground (Jennifer Owens-Jofré), to drawing from multiple disciplinary fields (Robert Chao Romero), to articulating a grounded theology that engages and relevantly responds to the social issues that impact Latinas/os/xs (María Teresa Dávila). Indeed, HTI has been front and center of these developments in Academia. Through these articles, we also learn that HTI has become a hub of creative scholarly interdisciplinary endeavors, which have impacted and continue to impact the academy through multiple written and social media platforms (Cármen Nanko). But the academy is not the only place where HTI scholars are present. Socorro Castañeda teaches us that it is possible to envision a life and career beyond the academy, and Elizabeth Conde-Frazier shows how HTI scholars have remained with one foot in the academy and the other in pastoral or community leadership, breaking away from traditional ideas that it is impossible to be a hybrid scholar. Above and beyond, through their testimonies, scholars repeatedly remind us that one of HTI’s best-kept secrets is its growing family of scholars, friends, and colleagues who encourage and support each other through networks of connections unrivalled in other academic circles (Gilberto Ruiz and Jacqueline Hidalgo).
Readers will not find in this anniversary issue a complete story. Gaps remain because the story of HTI continues to be unearthed and written. New future developments await HTI. There is renewed energy as a new generation of emerging scholars will bring new perspectives, ideas, and insights that can only elevate HTI to new heights. On this 25-silver anniversary, we are delighted to be part of the story of HTI.

The Editorial TeamResumen:Hace veinticinco años que entré las puertas de la Iniciativa Teológica Hispana (ITH). Yo era un estudiando aspirando al PhD, y también era un candidato para lo que eran entonces las becas para doctorantes. Entonces, no sabía yo que apenas cuatro años antes ITH había comenzado su plan ambicioso de trazar nuevos caminos y de crear nuevas oportunidades para Latinas/os/es aspirando una mayor educación en religión y teología. Entre sus objetivos estaba aumentar el número de Latinas/os/es en educación superior religiosa y teológica. Desde entonces, el HTI ha sido testigo de un enorme crecimiento en medio de un contexto de cambios sociales, culturales, políticos, y académicos acelerados. Una lista larga de Latinas/os/es becados en diferentes campos de estudio y disciplinas hoy “devuelven” a la comunidad, ya como estudiosos y académicos, mentores, y como recursos. La primera generación de académicos se ha convertido en una verdadera nube de testigos animando a las futuras cohortes de académicos, pastores/as, y líderes comunitarios en sus contextos múltiples. Estos preparados/as con habilidades claves para navegar los contextos sociales hostiles que confrontan. Desde cualquier perspectiva, la historia de HTI es una historia de alcances monumentales.

DownloadAlmost a year and a half ago, the world embarked on a rollercoaster of social uncertainty and death caused by the then-novel Coronavirus. Since its inception, COVID-19 has been part of the common parlance of the world. Knowing about the rapid spread of the Coronavirus was made possible by the exponential growth of communications technology and a new generation of people whose preferred mode of interaction is through digital devices. Through that same technology, we saw the emergence of the struggles of the Black Lives Matter movement. We found out about the death of several Black and racialized peoples at the hands of the police and immigration authorities. We learned about the profound systemic social, political, and economic inequities that shape our societies, including access to COVID-19 vaccination. And we also got to watch and listen, in real-time, the captivating and challenging poem of Amanda Gorman, as she spoke during the inauguration of newly elected USA President Joe Biden. We found out about multiple changes in the political arena across the world and the unjust war that Israel carries against Palestinians. Our digital devices also allowed us to be virtual eyewitnesses of the unmarked burial site where 215 children were buried on the grounds of the Catholic Indian Residential schools at Kamloops, British Colombia. Meanwhile, human existence is increasingly threatened by the potential of an environmental apocalypse and by the emergence of super viruses resistant to drugs.

At no point in human history have we been aware of the fast-changing pace of reality and of our cultural traditions to the degree we are now. It seems we have become enthralled by the “latest” and the “newest” piece of news and information by staying connected. Yet, this same wealth and accessibility to communications technology also contribute to our reduced ability to concentrate, to pay attention, and to connect at a personal human level. These many questions are undoubtedly the result of the new reality we confront as the world has continued to shrink and as we become painfully aware of our own destructive power in this planet of ours. These multiple issues I mention are not just topics for further discussion and exploration; they are part of the very processes of the undergoing cultural reconfiguration we are experiencing across the globe. These topics are also part of the complex array of interconnected social forces emerging as the world becomes more aware of the legacy of colonization, and the efforts of collective struggles for justice around the globe.
Amidst this jungle of social issues, cultural concerns, and human challenges, religious devotion and spiritualities seem to be gaining ground. But these are no longer dominated by Christianity. A new interreligious ferment is emerging as new digital churches, mosques, and centers of spirituality are popping up everywhere, even while scandals of religious leaders continue to emerge, and entire tragedies can be directly connected to religion and theology. It seems we are finally coming to grips with the fact that theology can be counted as yet another accomplice in the colonizing project. For religious scholars and theologians, it is no longer business as usual. As people wrestle with the many losses of loved ones whose lives have been cut short due to the Coronavirus, questions about the meaning of life are resurfacing. Not surprisingly, liberation theologies and decolonizing attitudes are gaining ground with renewed force in their dis-covering of the multiplicity of issues of which theology must be mindful, besides being aware of the necessity to think about the reality on the ground—where people live life and weave their religious traditions in their everyday life.
On that note, and as part of this mix of emerging issues today, we are happy to offer you the 2021 issue of Perspectivas. Each of the articles helps us amplify our visions and understanding of the Latina/o/x religious experience in response to contemporary issues pertinent to these communities. In the first article, Neomi DeAnda presents a rich interlacing of historical events, mythological accounts, and popular religious customs in the devotion of María de la Leche in two different sites. De Anda retraces some of the historical aspects that contributed to the emergence of such devotions, how they have changed over time, and how they have endured the test of time. Indeed, Latinas/os/xs are not unfamiliar with hope and hopelessness, as the second article by César Baldelomar’s exemplifies. Taking a robust philosophical approach, he engages the field of ethics and the pervasive emphasis of a Christian hope for an otherworldly reality. Baldelomar challenges romantic and utopic notions of hope with what he calls a “realist” stance, claiming the rich tradition of Afro-pessimism and Latina/o/x hopelessness. He draws on these rich traditions to reorient our ethical imagination toward future possibilities. It is precisely that future that Hanna Kang, in the third article, invites us to reconsider even as we revise our past. Much in line with the work of Breny Mendoza by claiming the Arabs as part of the mix of mestizaje in Honduras, and much in the way of Ricardo Feierstein claiming the Jewish presence in Argentina, Kang amplifies our vision of mestizaje yet again by registering the Asian presence both in Latin America and among Latinas/os/xs. She further broadens our vision of this contested term carving out spaces where we can reclaim the Asian presence among us.
In this 2021 issue of Perspectivas, we are particularly honored to also offer the presentations celebrating Peter Mena’s HTI 2020 Book of the year award. We are happy to provide these presentations by Jacqueline Hidalgo, Luis Rivera Pagán, and Kristi Upson-Saia, including Mena’s response to these presentations. Each of these presentations and Mena’s response illustrate the growing edges of Latina/o/x theologies and their versatility in engaging critical theoretical frameworks and ancient texts.
We offer this issue as a resource and invitation to continue our work across academic and non-academic plains.

Un nuevo fermento interreligioso está emergiendo al grado que nuevas iglesias, mezquitas, y centros de espiritualidad digital surgen por todos lados, aun cuando continuamos viendo escándalos de líderes religiosos, y de completas tragedias directamente influenciadas por la religión y la teología. Parece que finalmente estamos preparados para aceptar el hecho que la teología puede ser contada como otra fuerza cómplice en el proyecto colonizador. Para estudiosos/as/xs de la religión y teólogas/os/xs ya no se trata de continuar normalmente. DeAnda traza algunos de los aspectos históricos que contribuyeron al surgimiento de dichas devociones, cómo éstas han cambiado con el tiempo, y cómo han resistido la prueba del tiempo. Ciertamente, latinas/os/xs están familiarizados con la esperanza y la desesperanza, como lo muestra el segundo artículo por César Baldelomar. Tomando un acercamiento filosófico robusto, el interactúa con el campo de la ética y el énfasis omnipresente de una esperanza cristiana otromundista. Baldelomar desafía nociones de Esperanza románticas y utópicas con lo que él denomina una postura “realista”, reclamando las ricas tradiciones del Afro-pesimismo y la desesperanza latina/o/x. Él toma de estas ricas tradiciones para reorientar nuestra imaginación ética hacia posibilidades futuras. Es precisamente ese futuro el que Hanna Kang, en el tercer artículo, nos invita a reconsiderar mientras revisamos nuestro pasado. Como lo haría Breny Méndoza al clamar los árabes como parte de la mezcla mestiza en Honduras, y mucho en la manera de la que Ricardo Feierstein reclama la presencia judía en Argentina, Kang amplifica la visión del mestizaje una vez más, registrando la presencia asiática tanto en Latinoamérica como entre los/as/xs latinas/os/xs. Además, ella amplía nuestra visión de este término tan discutido para crear espacios donde podamos recobrar la presencia asiática entre nosotros/as/xs.
En esta edición 2021 de Perspectivas, también nos sentimos honrados/as/xs al poder ofrecer las presentaciones celebrando el Premio de HTI al libro del año 2020 otorgado a Peter Mena. Nos sentimos orgullosos de proveer estas presentaciones por Jacqueline Hidalgo, Luis Rivera Pagán, y Kristi Upson-Saia, incluyendo la respuesta a estas presentaciones por Peter Mena. Cada una de estas presentaciones y la respuesta de Mena ilustran algunos de las áreas de crecimiento de las teologías latinas/os/xs y su versatilidad al abordar marcos teóricos críticos y textos antiguos.

DownloadResponding to the needs and demands of his era, José Míguez Bonino proved instrumental in thinking with his feet on the ground amid uncertainty, turmoil, and despair. As with other liberation theologians, his theological and ethical work drew on the lived experiences of the faith of the people amidst struggles toward building a better and more just society and world. His theological work speaks to us candidly, especially today, as we grapple with the multiple ways the present COVID-19 global pandemic has affected us all directly. Human relations and cultural dynamics are being reconfigured as we speak. As we come to grips with racialized prejudice targeting members of the Asian communities in relation to COVID-19, we are eerily reminded that the ugly history of blaming ethnic groups for the outbreak of a disease is nothing new. Social distancing (or more accurately, physical distancing) has also brought new levels of suspicion of others as potential carriers of the virus.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssuePerhaps the novel COVID-19 has come to be the great “equalizer,” whereby people from all over the world and from all walks of life and social spheres are directly affected. What we do know for certain is that the social, political, and economic arrangements that have shaped the present geopolitical structures have clearly revealed the socio-economic disparities that have benefited specific sectors of society at the expense of over-exploited minoritized groups. For example, lack of accessibility to economic resources, proper medication and equipment, medical insurance, and outright access to a hospital bed, are part of a far greater and older scale of global inequality, which has remained hidden behind the façade of advancement and modernization locally and globally. Minoritized communities are particularly bearing the brunt and negative effects of the COVID-19 virus, even while filling the ranks of essential services in the food, farming, cleaning, and many other industries.
Latinas/os/xs are among the hardest hit as only 16 percent of us can carry out their working responsibilities at home. [1] Social distancing (physical distancing) is a luxury, which many in these communities cannot afford. A good number of Latinas/os/xs simply need to continue working or else risk losing their homes or not saving up for their children’s education. While working, they jeopardize their lives in order to supply the needs of the larger society.
Historically, Latinas/os/xs have experienced a conglomeration of challenges to our collective wellbeing. Some of our ancestors experienced times of war and despoliation during the Spanish and Portuguese conquest. Let’s not forget the tens of millions of natives who died because of epidemics, which decimated Indigenous communities in the Americas after 1492.
The slave trade had similar deadly consequences, as Latin America received the largest population of African slaves, many of whom died along the way, were thrown to the oceans, or died of disease or outright exhaustion from working in the mines or in the fields. These slaves saw their lives commodified as chattel, without recourse for a life of freedom. As we recall the experiences of the African descendants in Latin America and among Latinas/os/xs, we affirm that Black Lives Matter. Part of our own role as Latina/o/x scholars is to expose and condemn prevailing anti-African overt and covert attitudes of discrimination in our communities. We must publicly acknowledge that our own communities are directly impacted by and often are rife with racist attitudes. Thus, we reject to be part of any form of racism and discrimination.
Many of our ancestors experienced displacement in the USA-Mexico war (1848) and continue to feel the effects of that war in our own neighborhoods. Still others, with more recent connections with Latin America have seen friends and relatives criminalized or die as they have tried to cross the southern border of the USA or as the women in their families have been victims of femicide. While many in the dominant Anglo culture want to go back to normal, for most Latinas/os/xs, “going back to normal” means the continued perpetuation of the over-exploitation of our communities. We have always lived under exceptional conditions of discrimination and lack of opportunities. Those exceptional conditions have designated most of us, at best, for service at the lowest echelons of society, and at worst, for death. For centuries, our communities have come face-to-face with the tensions that emerge out of living simultaneously in struggle, hopelessness, and refusal to give up. The unbending will of our communities is a testament to our faith and resilience.
It is with that in mind that we publish this collection of articles celebrating the life and theological work of José Míguez Bonino. The papers in this collection were compiled by Néstor Morales Gómez, and we recognize his editorial work in this issue of Perspectivas. Míguez Bonino’s thought has inspired generations of scholars and thinkers in understanding the interconnectedness of the social sciences, political theory, and deep locally grounded theological knowledge. The contributions in this issue of Perspectivas help us celebrate Míguez Bonino’s work, as well as offer important insights as we continue to reflect on what it means to think theologically while remaining locally relevant and contextually located.
The editorial team of Perspectivas is happy to offer this collection of articles as an expression of the rich diversity of liberation ideas, insights, concerns, and questions raised by each of the authors. Each piece helps us see the extent the liberation impetus has travelled and the many allies it has gained and impacted over the years.

Como con otros teólogos/as de la liberación, sus escritos teológicos y éticos partieron de las experiencias de fe vividas por los pueblos en medio de la lucha por construir una sociedad y mundo mejores y más justos. Su trabajo teológico nos habla con franqueza, especialmente hoy, mientras buscamos entender las formas múltiples con las que la pandemia global del COVID-19 nos afecta a todos/as/es directamente. Las relaciones humanas y las dinámicas culturales están siendo reconfiguradas ahora mismo. Lo que sí sabemos por cierto es que los arreglos sociales, políticos, y económicos que han dado forma a las estructuras geopolíticas de hoy revelan claramente las disparidades socioeconómicas que han beneficiado algunos sectores de la sociedad al costo de los grupos minorizados sobreexplotados. Por ejemplo, la falta de accesibilidad a recursos económicos, medicamentos y equipo médico apropiado, seguro médico, y acceso a una cama de hospital, son parte de una escala de desigualdad global mucho mayor y más antigua, que ha permanecido escondida detrás de la fachada de avance y modernización local y globalmente. Las comunidades minorizadas son las que llevan particularmente el peso y son las que soportan los efectos negativos del virus COVID-19, aun cuando llenan las filas de servicios esenciales en las industrias alimenticia, agrícola, de limpieza, y muchas otras.
Latinas/os/xs se encuentran entre los grupos más afectados porque solamente 16 por ciento puede cumplir sus responsabilidades de trabajo desde sus hogares.[1] Distanciamiento social (distanciamiento físico) es un lujo, el cual muchos en estas comunidades no pueden tener. Un buen número de Latinas/os/xs simplemente necesitan continuar trabajando o corren el riesgo de perder sus casas o de no ahorrar suficiente para la educación de sus hijos/as/xs. Mientras trabajan, ellos/as arriesgan sus vidas para satisfacer las necesidades de la sociedad mayor. Históricamente Latinas/os/xs hemos confrontado una aglomeración de retos a nuestro bienestar colectivo. Algunos de nuestros/as antepasados experimentaron tiempos de guerra y despojo durante las conquistas española y portuguesa. No olvidemos las decenas de millones de nativos que murieron debido a la epidemia que diezmó las comunidades Indígenas en las américas después de 1492.
La trata de esclavos tuvo consecuencias fatales similares, porque Latinoamérica recibió la mayor población de esclavos africanos, muchos de los cuales murieron en el camino, fueron tirados a los mares, o murieron de enfermedad o agotamiento total por trabajar en las minas o en el campo. Estos esclavos vieron sus vidas cosificadas como animales sin recurso alguno a una vida de libertad. Mientras nos recordamos de las experiencias de los descendientes de África en Latinoamérica y entre Latinas/os/xs, también afirmamos que Black Lives Matter (las vidas Negras son importantes). Parte de nuestro rol como académicos Latinas/os/xs es exponer y condenar actitudes de discriminación-abiertas y encubiertas—anti-africanas que prevalecen en nuestras comunidades. Debemos de reconocer públicamente que nuestras propias comunidades son impactadas directamente por y que a menudo están plagadas de actitudes racistas. Por lo mismo, nos rehusamos a ser parte de cualquier forma de racismo y discriminación.
Muchos de nuestros antepasados sufrieron desplazamientos durante la guerra entre Los Estados Unidos de América y México (1848), y aún continúan sintiendo los efectos negativos de esa guerra en sus propios barrios. Aun otros, con muchas más conexiones con Latinoamérica han visto amigos/as/xs criminalizados/as/xs, o les han visto morir al intentar cruzar la frontera sur de los E.E.U.U., o ha sufrido cuando las mujeres o sus familias han sido victimizadas por femicidio. Mientras muchos en la cultura dominante Anglo quieren regresar a la normalidad, para la mayoría de Latinas/os/xs “regresar a la normalidad” significa la continuación de la perpetua sobre-explotación de nuestras comunidades. Siempre hemos vivido en condiciones excepcionales de discriminación y falta de oportunidades. Esas condiciones excepcionales han designado a muchos de nosotros para los servicios en los más bajos niveles sociales, y en los peores casos, para la muerte. Por siglos, nuestras comunidades han confrontado las tensiones que surgen como resultado de vivir en la encrucijada entre la lucha, la desesperanza, y el rehusarse a darse por vencidas. La voluntad inquebrantable de nuestras comunidades es un testamento a nuestra fe y resiliencia.
Es con esto en mente que publicamos esta colección de artículos celebrando la vida y trabajo teológico de José Míguez Bonino. Los artículos en esta colección fueron compilados por Néstor Morales Gómez, y reconocemos su trabajo editorial en este volumen de Perspectivas. El pensamiento de Míguez Bonino ha inspirado generaciones de académicos y pensadores a entender la interconexión de las ciencias sociales, teoría política, y el conocimiento teológico con profundas raíces en contextos locales. Las contribuciones en este volumen de Perspectivas nos ayudan a celebrar el trabajo de Míguez Bonino como también ofrecer claves importantes en lo que significa pensar teológicamente mientras permanecemos localmente relevantes y ubicados en nuestros contextos.

The speed at which social changes occur often leave theologians, scholars of religion, and church communities unable to respond in ways that are relevant to the current sociopolitical climate. The present context of increased targeted xenophobia—inside and outside the USA, of unmitigated racism which frequently characterizes entire communities as criminals, terrorists, or social threats, has conspired to create an environment of fear, heightened surveillance, and strategic sociopolitical maneuvering. Against this backdrop, targeted communities seek to resist oppression, marginalization, and discrimination. This strongly negative sociopolitical climate has failed to silence the impacted communities including Muslims, African Americans, and LatinaXos, among others.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssueInstead, it has proven to be a fertile ground for multiple faith communities and individuals across the USA to come together to work to ameliorate the situation of many racialized people facing discrimination or deportation. At this critical historical juncture, this issue of Perspectivas is honored to include essays from multiple different academic, ministerial, and activist perspectives by varying scholars of religion and theology in their own attempt at responding to the present sociopolitical configuration faced by LatinaXo communities. The articles that follow and the presentations from a roundtable conversation showcase the rich creativity and relevance to these issues among scholars of religion and theology.
In the first article, Lloyd Barba and Tatyana Castillo-Ramos demonstrate how, in this most inhospitable social climate, church communities rise up prophetically in response to the present anti-immigrant policies in the United States of America. Their work traces the early emergence and development of the Sanctuary Movement during the 1980s which was spearheaded by church communities emboldened in their stance against policies that force individuals to risk their lives in the attempt to cross the USA-Mexico border. Barba and Castillo-Ramos aid us in understanding the level of engagement and commitment by entire church communities, counties, and municipalities in their attempt to create sanctuary spaces safe for undocumented immigrants. After a brief lull, they remind us, the movement seems to have regained energy with new strategies and actors involved since 2007, and a new label, the New Sanctuary Movement. But the authors also show the contested nature of the notion of “Sanctuary” and the multiple legal, social, political, and faith implications of its adoption by church communities, cities, counties, and municipalities. Crucial to this essay is the awareness of the growing involvement of LatinaXo church communities in Sanctuary efforts.
In the second article, Rodolfo Estrada III comes to us with a New Testament perspective. His biblical interpretive approach addresses the challenges and concerns faced by the DREAMER (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) generation, also known as those included in the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) immigration policy. Drawing on his Pentecostal tradition of understanding the Holy Spirit as active in the world, he takes the Johannine notion of the paraclete as it appears in Jesus’ farewell speech, as a theological cue for engaging in advocacy for undocumented children. His aim is to apply a pneumatological approach in support of socio–political engagement and in order to articulate a model for LatinaXos to think about advocacy for DREAMERS and other undocumented children and youth among LatinaXo communities. With a prophetic voice, Estrada III interprets the notion of paraclete in the gospel of John to elucidate a distinct divine act of protection for the vulnerable and marginalized DREAMERS.
Philip Wingeier-Rayo takes on the question of LatinaXo sociopolitical activism, in the third essay. In view of the fact that LatinaXos have become the largest ethnic minoritized group in the USA, he raises questions as to how LatinaXos can, in this new context of enormous discrimination, come together to organize in order to effect social change for the benefit of LatinaXo communities. He points out that the demographic growth among LatinaXos has not translated into increased political power and mobilization. Moreover, the mobilization in places where LatinaXo workers are in the majority, and with substantial population of DREAMERS, has not resulted in lasting immigration reforms so needed by many LatinaXos. In light of this reality, Wingeier-Rayo explores social justice activism in African American communities in the search of models from which LatinaXos can learn as they engage in social justice activism in their own contexts. He is not oblivious to the multiple hurdles LatinaXos communities have to face due to their internal ethnocultural, historical, and religious diversity. Nevertheless, he is able to look into the future, to the emergence of a larger social movement that will cut across ethnoracial background. In such a social movement, he predicts, LatinaXos must play a central role and constitute a key piece of the puzzle for social justice due to their sheer numbers.
These three papers are followed by a roundtable conversation organized by La Comunidad of Hispanic Scholars for Religion this past November (2018). The meeting took place in Denver, Colorado, as part of the American Academy of Religion conference. At that meeting, La Comunidad invited three scholars to reflect on the academic legacy and contribution to the field of hermeneutics of Professor Fernando S. Segovia, in relation to the recent phenomenon of “Fake News.” We are honored that the three presentations are published in this issue of Perspectivas and that the President of La Comunidad, Professor Loida Martell-Otero, has written a brief editorial introduction. Together these roundtable discussions provide readers with a sampling of the richness of this conversation and a celebration of Professor Segovia’s work.
We, the team at Perspectivas, hope that this issue proves resourceful for LatinaXo scholars interested in some of the developments discussed in the papers here contained. Migration and sanctuary, LatinaXo biblical approaches to the question of DREAMERS, and the intersection between marginalization and social activism are pressing issues in today’s increasingly xenophobic reality. As shown here, LatinaXos scholars are the forefront of those debates.

Recurriendo a su tradición pentecostal de entender el Espíritu Santo como activo en el mundo, Estrada III toma la noción joánica del paracleto como aparece en el discurso de despedida de Jesús, como una señal teológica para participar en la defensa de los/as niños/as indocumentados. Philip Wingeier-Rayo aborda la cuestión del activismo sociopolítico latinaXo en el tercer ensayo. En vista del hecho que latinaXos se han convertido en el grupo minoritario étnico más grande de los EUA, el plantea preguntas sobre cómo LatinaXos pueden, en este contexto de enorme discriminación, organizarse para lograr juntos un cambio social en beneficio de las comunidades latinaXos. This issue contains unique approaches to Latinx theology and food, issues of migration and the crisis of migrant children on the border, and the crisis in Puerto Rico, from a variety of historical, theological and political perspectives.
In “Sancochando Theological Anthropology: One Puerto Rican Heavy Soup as Heuristic,” Hector Varela-Rios, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Chicago Divinity School, expounds on a real world practice in Puerto Rican cuisine, “el sancocho,” as a comparative construct for doing theological anthropology. Read MoreCollapse / Download Issuea value judgment on either side of the equation – Puerto Rican culture or constructive theology – Varela-Rios posits that these two “conversation partners” – culture and theology – are indeed integral to “cooking” a theological anthropology. Thus, in this case, the elements of cooking in the Latinx context – specifically, a uniquely Puerto Rican dish – become a model for the practice of constructive theology, most appropriately so in the field of reflecting on a theology of humanity.
It is precisely in order to construct a humane theology that our second author, Linda Dakin-Grimm, an immigration lawyer in Los Angeles, who just completed a Master’s degree in Theology, approaches the current crises on the USA border in her essay, “God Suffers with Children: What is Our Response?” Based on actual experiences with immigrant children in her work on the border, Dakin-Grimm explores the theological bases for humane immigration policies and practices. Short of such policies, Christians and people of faith of all types are challenged to practice an ethics of resistance and disruption. Dakin-Grimm draws on the Hebrew Scriptures, patristic theology and such contemporary theologians as Leonardo Boff, Jon Sobrino and Jürgen Moltmann, as well as more recent work by Miguel De La Torre. This essay was completed before the most recent border crises with the separation of children from their families; so it is very much a prescient and cogent discussion of a theological basis for action from the perspective of a theologically trained lawyer and activist.
Another current event is foundational for the next set of essays in our issue, a special section of reflections on the recent crisis in Puerto Rico. Shortly after the disastrous pair of hurricanes, and exceedingly slow and inadequate response by both federal and insular governments, a forum on the situation in Puerto Rico was held at the Annual Meetings of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature in November 2017. Several Puerto Rican scholars from various historical and theological perspectives responded to the call for efforts to understand and explain how this could happen to Puerto Rico. Three of those presentations, one from biblical scholar Jean-Pierre Ruiz, one from ethicist Melissa Pagan and one from theologian Loida Martell-Otero are included in our issue. Each, with various levels of emphases, identify the historical issues inherent in the colonial situation of Puerto Rico, describe the aftermath of the deadly hurricanes and the weak infrastructure allowed to perturb the Island for so long, and explore biblical, theological and ethical resources in order to explain and energize responses to the immediate situation of devastation in the region.
Finally, among reviews of books by Latinx scholars about Puerto Rican theology, Christian vocation, “flesh theology,” Latin American church history and Mexican Pentecostalism, we offer an expanded book review “roundtable” of three reflections on Jacqueline Hidalgo’s important new work on the Book of Revelation and Latinx history and theology: Revelation in Aztlán: Scriptures, Utopias and the Chicano Movement. Professor Hidalgo, who teaches Religion and Latinx Studies at Williams College, explores how it is that we learn about the phenomena of “scripturalizing” – creating authoritative texts – from the interpretation history of the Christian book of Revelation but especially from a similarly “apocalyptic” and utopian text, El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán. The three reviews explore the contributions of Hidalgo’s book to the larger enterprise of biblical and religious studies, as well as understanding the role of religion and religious texts in Latinx and Chicanx cultures.

As the reader will soon discover, the questions raised in these articles are timelier than ever: How do Latina/o communities reimagine and reclaim the concept of citizenship when the dominant society denies them this very title, along with the rights, privileges, and opportunities that come with it? What can the Young Lords Party teach us about radical activism and Latina/o religious history? How do the insights and practices of fringe and marginalized communities undermine the theoretical premises and promises of multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism? In the process of navigating and thinking about these complex social justice issues, our readers are also invited by one contributor to ask: Just how queer is the messianic spirit of Marx and Marxism? And finally: How can a Pentecostal prophetess help liberate patriarchal conceptions of church leadership and domesticity?
The present collection of essays demonstrates a commitment to nuanced and imaginative thinking about the Latina/o experience that is engaging, thought-provoking, and grounded in real life issues pertaining to Latina/o (USA and Canada), Latin American, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean communities. The essays combine a scholarly commitment to broadening, complicating, and illuminating the lived faith experiences of these communities, with an approach that is accessible to wide and diverse audiences.
The first set of essays below focus on activism, community organizing, and social movements. Ofelia Ortega, in a paper originally presented at the 9th Annual Herencia Lectures, “A Past and Present Look at Protestant Cuban Theology,” at Princeton Theological Seminary, in September 2016, focuses on the development of protestant theology during Cuba’s revolutionary period. As part of her lecture, which was delivered in honor of Sergio Arce Martínez, Ortega outlines the primary cultural, political, and religious influences of the period as well some key theological themes that resulted from this period. Among these include practices of love, presence, and participation; re-imagining ecclesiology, evangelism, and mission; theological engagement with culture, economy, and peace & reconciliation movements; and innovative theologies of the “desert” and the “absurd.” A key final theme, Ortega shows, is the crucial role that women’s perspectives played in the formation and development of Protestant Cuban theology.
Robert Chao Romero explores the Christian spirituality and commitment of the famed Chicano civil rights leader César Chávez in his contribution, “The Spiritual Praxis of César Chávez.” Chávez’s influences, Romero demonstrates, ranged from “Abuelita theology” and Roman Catholic social teaching to various community based principles about social organizing. Romero argues that although our historical memory indicates otherwise, much of Chávez’s activist effort were deeply rooted in his Christian spirituality. The great march from the Central Valley to Sacramento, for example, drew explicitly from theological traditions of penitence and pilgrimage. Moreover, according to Romero, Chávez saw fasting and prayer as essential practices to the grape strike and the broader farm worker struggle. Romero makes sure to complicate Chavez’s legacy, illuminating how the later Chavez faced a “spiritual decentering” that pulled him away from his activism’s humble theological roots. At the end, Romero challenges those who attempt to secularize Chávez’s life and vision. “They take the ‘Rev.’ away from King,” Romero writes, “and the ‘abuelita theology’ away from Chávez.”
In his “The Faith of Saints and Citizens in Public Spaces,” Jonathan Calvillo draws on his five years of ethnographic research in Santa Ana, California, to examine the intersections of religious affiliation and ethnic identity among various Latina/o communities. Calvillo shows how communal religious practices performed in public spaces pushed against the boundaries of citizenship, especially among undocumented residents and those who have experienced various forms of educational segregation and limited economic opportunity. In the midst of societal exclusion and marginalization, these Latina/o faith communities, Calvillo argues, used some acts of public faith as acts of resistance, providing creative alternatives to ground their local citizenship.
Elías Ortega-Aponte invites readers to consider the critical import of studying Brown Power Movements for the field of Latina/o religious history. By focusing particularly on the Young Lords Party, Ortega-Aponte addresses the dangers of leaving non-religious social movement histories relatively unexplored in Latina/o Religious Studies. His argument is best read as an invitation for scholars in this field to take up “the task of analyzing religious Latino/a social movements and their contributions to Latino/ religiosity” while also highlighting the rich contributions of those seeking “to theorize la lucha as lived by secular Latino/a Activism.” Ultimately, Ortega-Aponte illuminates the many insights that can be gained from engaging with organizations that are highly critical of Latina/o religious institutions.
Our issue then takes a strong theoretical turn, broadening the discussions and yet calling for more specific, local, on-the-ground analyses, which are engaged in the following section. In his essay, “Is Liberation Theology a Political Theology?: Marcella Althaus-Reid’s Critical Hermeneutics and the Queer Messianic Question of Marxism,” Silas Morgan reveals a tension existing within the rising field of political theology, namely that its “Eurocentricity presents a problem for Latin American liberation theologies that are eager to escape the colonial clutches of the continent, that are looking for ways to recapture their indigenous vitality.” To address a way forward for Latin American theologians, Morgan encourages us to draw on the work of Marcella Althaus-Reid, who draws on Paul Ricoeur to imagine a queer messianic politics “that is as Christological as it is Marxist.” By situating Althaus-Reid in this way, Morgan invites the reader to position Latin American liberation theology as a political theology, one that both welcomes the rebirth of Marx yet also departs from methodologies of the contemporary European left.
Néstor Medina, in his article, “Latinas/os, Canada and Cosmopolitanism: A Look from its Exteriority,” interrogates traditional discourses around ideas of multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism and puts forth a broader evaluation of both ideas that “is only possible from its fringes, its exteriority.” Focusing on the Canadian practice of multiculturalism as his case study, Medina centers his analysis on the Latina/o experiences of systemic discrimination and marginalization. “Latinas/os should be understood not as haphazardly adopting-mixing cultural elements,” he writes, “but as immersed in an intentional process of simultaneous negotiation, disturbance, and interruption of conventional cultural grammars while remaining anchored in their cultural traditions, values, and customs: a cultural syncopation.” Medina concludes by highlighting ways in which communities of faith can play a pivotal role in imagining new and safer ways for people to live together, embrace each other’s cultures, and to encounter God.
The last written piece of this issue responds to the need for a more local on-the-ground analysis. In his “Profeta Ana Maldonado: Pushing the Boundaries of Paradoxical Domesticity,” Tito Madrazo introduces readers to the Pentecostal prophetess’ liberative vision imagined and practiced within a traditionally patriarchal space. While Madrazo describes Maldonado as adhering to a complementarian approach of church leadership, he rejects it as a passive acceptance or submission to patriarchy. Rather, Madrazo argues, Maldonado’s “paradoxical domesticity” serves an empowering role for female ministers. In addition, he demonstrates how domesticity plays a fundamental role in how her community interprets and conceives of the cobertura, or covering. Madrazo ultimately highlights Maldonado as one of many spiritual intellectuals and visionaries within Latina Pentecostalism who have both wrestled with and resisted various religious hierarchies designed to privilege some voices over others.

- Abstract:
Perspectivas is pleased to present its issue for the year 2008. We introduce this issue with a summary of the articles that have been selected for publication. In his article “Ritual and the Construction of Cultural Identity: An Example from Hispanic Liturgy,” Raúl Gómez-Ruiz draws the reader’s attention to some key questions which moved him to write the book Mozarabs, Hispanics, and the Cross (Orbis, 2007), for which he received the 2008 HTI Book Prize. The questions which lure him to explore the relationship between ritual, culture, and identity begin with the quest to discover the meaning behind particular religious rituals in the Hispanic cultural heritage, namely, those of the Mozarab community in Toledo, Spain.
Read MoreCollapse / Download IssueThe author begins by drawing his audience to participate with him in the Mozarab processions and Good Friday liturgies of Toledo. His own participation in these liturgies leads him to consider in depth the meaning of ritual in relation to culture and identity. He dis- covers that culture and identity develop hand-in-hand, by means of religious rituals that re-enact sacred events. When the discus- sion of cultural identity and religious ritual is considered in the context of the situation of Latinas/os in the United States, the issue of the construction of identity comes to the fore.
Alberto Hernández situates Gómez-Ruiz’s book in the broader context of the history of Christianity and Spain as a significant contribution to the academic, theological, and cultural project of recovering the history of the medieval Iberian Catholic tradition, a tradition whose ancient Mozarabic elements still influence Hispanic spirituality in Spain and portions of the former Spanish Empire. The author responds first as a historian specializing in the religious history of medieval and early modern Spain. And, sec- ondly, he responds from the viewpoint of a Hispanic American whose questions on cultural identity and family heritage reflect similar themes raised by Gómez-Ruiz about Hispano-Mozarabic ritual practices, liturgy, and cultural identity
Peter Casarella responds to the work of Raúl Gómez-Ruiz by focusing on what Mozarabic identity might mean to Latinas/os. He begins by considering further the issue of a Mozarabic com- munal identity which, “apart from liturgical acts,” is hardly acknowledged by fellow Spanish citizens. He then raises the ques- tion of whether Mozarabic identity can, in this sense, be compared to Latina/o identity, drawing attention to the disparities between Mozarabs and Latinas/os, even as he addresses the possibility of their similarities. Next, he elaborates on the symbolism of the cross which is presented in Mozarabs, Hispanics, and the Cross and lastly comments briefly on the type of liturgical theology which appears in this book.
“Strangers No More” is a collaborative project that has devel- oped a forum for the purpose of bringing Latina/o and African American scholars of theology and religion in dialogue with one another in order to facilitate partnership and mutual support. We share with our readers several documents that developed as a result of two workshops that were held in November 2005 and November 2007 at the annual joint meetings of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. The authors of these documents include: Sharon Watson Fluker, Edwin Aponte, Evelyn L. Parker, James Logan, Elaine Padilla, Stephanie M. Crumpton, Néstor Medina, and Kamasi Hill.
